Whirlpool Next Gen. Front Load Washer - Based on a new core architecture for front load washers and dryers. The whirlpool GCD group required a rapid design study to explore a new unique aesthetic. Concepts were explored based on 3 prescribed visual directions: Layering, Framing and Integration. The final selection was a combination of several different concepts. The result; a concept design that was pure in form and simplicity incorporating various colors, materials and finishes to elevate above the current market competition.
Whirlpool Next Gen. Front Load Washer - These loose sketches show some early concepts based on the ZORA core architecture. The side panel was a fixed element and so the remaining form had to work around size and shape. This scenario created an opportunity for faux handle element. The visual composition between the door, the bezel and the pump access area were all investigated.
Whirlpool Next Generation Front Load Washer - These higher resolution sketches illustrate the concepts better in terms of scale and proportion. Doors, controls, UI areas are clearly marked out. The desire was to create a more dynamic stance to the product while retaining the tight, clean lines and contemporary shape.
Whirlpool Next Gen. Front Load Washer - The next round of design refinement involved a final sketch to lead into 3D exploration. An all translucent glass front bezel became a major design element, allowing the user to look into the product rather than just look at it. A soft domed oversized glass door was another design element. The UI area was secret panel hidden behind the front bezel, illuminated only when the appliance is in use.
Whirlpool Next Gen. Front Load Washer - The final concept features a compound curving front surface. The side panel and framing is signified by the silver metallic finish. the center section is signified by the smoked traslucent material which wraps over the top onto the roof. To allow a similar dryer unit to stack on top, a flat spot was created on the top surface. The side panels feature a banding pattern embossed for structural integrity. The pump access and detergent filling are behind the lower front panel.
