Term 1, Housing & Urbanism MA
London, Fall 2013 (group project)

This study reveals the force that higher education institutions can play in the urban fabric and its uses.
The analysis of the area’s figure ground revealed the fragmentation of a neighborhood known for its small grain and affordable housing. Big institutions and big gentrifying housing projects are starting to locate in the area, thus slowly changing the original character of the place.
Our aim was to demonstrate that the existing fabric could still be used, or activated. Thus enhancing the areas original character and opening up for users of all income levels.
Voids and sequences of spaces between buildings were used as the main areas of interventions. Our site, presented a complex system of spaces that by slight modification could be incorporated into the major pedestrian system, while adding further uses to activate the entire external surrounding space of the present buildings.
