Mitchell Island

Vancouver, Fall 2011

On the Fraser River, between Vancouver and Richmond one finds man-made island. Mostly industrial, but for a small park.

Goal: revitalize the site by transforming it into a sculpture park. An attraction for local workers and members of the nearest neighborhoods.

This involved a collaborative class investigation. Independently, I then focused on bringing in water and creating a park based on bridges and different elevation experiences, allowing visitors to experience the industrial inspired sculptures from different points.

Additionally, I wanted to acknowledge Mitchell Island’s development from its initial 3 islands. So I divided the park into three zones (and islands), joined by bridges (symbolizing recent connectivity and its industrial background ).

In phase 3, my architectural intervention served as a water entry to the park. Thus offering an alternative access route and opening the park for a wider rage of users and uses.
