Butterfly Manuscript

Commission for recreated medieval manuscript.

Based on the Mira Calligraphiae Moumenta, the last manuscript created in Europe. All the butterflies are common European species, and the plants have symbolic meanings forming a visual narrative; a very popular conceit in the sixteenth century.

Chinese Ink, liquid gold, silver gouache, body colour on archival parchmentine, 2014.
