I chose the ripped paper effect for several reasons. Rips and tears are common telltale marks of a vintage photograph. This Photoshop effect is very popular now, and I wanted to try my hand at it. I also
believe that pictures lose their word count over time. The modern
observer no longer has the social primer to grasp the significance of the details of the image. By applying text inside a masked layer in this “peeled away” manner, the image shows that these people are full
of layers and part of the texture of their family and communities.
The words that I typed are all or some of the titles that we have
possessed at one time or another. I ripped it in the middle to show that this is my family's collective history, at the center of all of us.
