Hex Pac - Upper Body Protection for Urban Cyclists

Hex Pac is the project that I undertook during my final year of university.

The initial brief stated that I must solve a problem in any area of design. After conducting large amounts of research I decided to focus on the cycle safety market, specifically urban cycling.

With increasing amounts of people choosing to cycle as a preferred method of transport, injuries sustained on the roads are on the rise. Common areas for these injuries to occur are the collar bone, shoulder and spine so this is where the focus of my design lied.

Through careful consideration of materials, design alterations and costings I reached Hex Pac as my final solution. The product aims to provide a lightweight, fully adjustable layer to be worn over a T Shirt or light jumper. Pads located on the shoulders and back aim to protect against the aforementioned injuries with the product folding up into a small carry bag. Hex Pac weighs in at 700 grams, making it easy to wear for a full days cycling.
