A takeaway cup that uses molded pulp made from 100% recycled paper for both the cup and its lid. It uses natural binders and coating for fully biodegradable design. The resulting combination is more durable, more user-friendly, and more environmentally responsible than standard cardboard cups. Built around a program that encourages consumer reuse, Mea Pulpa enhances the overall drinking experience and increases product sustainability.
The initial premise of MeaPulpa’s design is that the typical throwaway cup and lid combination suffer from a series of design flaws that cause leaks or lead to other user inconvenience. MeaPulpa addresses these flaws with a simple and effective design.
MeaPulpa was further refined and developed into an entry for Starbucks® BetacupTM competition. The competition called for entries aimed at redefining the way in which beverages, particularly coffee, were served, focusing on sustainability and user experience.
An important aspect of sustainability is user adoption and ensuring that the product is used to its full potential. Accordingly, the BetacupTM entry for MeaPulpa also included the development of a consumer education and reward program.
