Front View - Vertically deconstruct one-half of a wooden chair. Design and reconstruct this half with the consideration and associations you have for this object, for example, identity, function, and appearance. Objectives: * To investigate space in relationship to 3-dimensional forms. * To carefully consider design elements and how they effect the overall unity (or the disruption) of space and form. * To strengthen technical construction skills. * To develop an effective visual presentation.
Rear View - Chair symbolizes the contradiction between the old and organic look of the original half to the new and geometric style of the constructed half. I also wanted to literally recreate the structural decisions incorporated into the original half of the chair (for example 4 vertical risers on each half of backrest, or the spacing for the crossbeams on the legs).
Seat Detail - Seat made from 5 2x2's glued together (butcher block style) then finished with a decorative trim to hide the grain of the ends.
3/4 View - Entire chair was constructed out of 2x4's ripped and re-sawed down to the various lengths and widths needed for the construction.
3/4 View Detail - There was no hardware used during construction of the chair (nails, screws, ect.) consists of over 20 different dowel joints which give the chair a flawless finish and extremely sturdy structure.
Backrest - Finished with 4 coats of clear spray on enamel to create an eye-catching gloss and make it appear extremely new.
Side View - Construction of the chair cost only $4 for the spray enamel and all the other materials were salvaged from scraps. Also fully functional and easily supports a person sitting in it.
