B&ECPL | a new direction - My primary design concerns for the Buffalo & Erie County public library focused on the complete lack of effective signage and wayfinding systems, which consequently led to patron user frustration, confusion and ultimate dissatisfaction. I than wished to target the lack of visual energy and excitement within the space, and desired to work towards the B&ECPL becoming a fun, hip and accessible landmark for the City of Buffalo.

The primary focus - I wanted the system of signage and wayfinding I developed to immediately combat the viewer upon entrance into the library. Therefore, viewers are forced through a letter podium and floor plan kiosk, which they walk upon, interact with, and are able to instantly identify and make associations about the space they are navigating.

Color as a universal language - Due to the multitude of languages spoken and cultures represented in the city of buffalo, a traditional wayfinding system based on the english language was not appropriate. A system based upon color was derived, upon the theory that color transcends all cultures and more often than not ilicits the same connotations and emotions. A color was assigned to each area of study within the library, and simply by following the color throughout the space patrons could easily reach their goal.
