Flex Laptop - As part of my internship at Compaq I was asked to propose a "thesis" project. I chose to return to Compaq's roots by designing the next generation portable desktop computer. The final design functions as a traditional clamshell laptop on the road but transforms into a highly functional desktop in the office. When the wireless keyboard is removed, the screen can articulate forward to a wide range of vertical, horizontal and tilt positions. This configuration moves the footprint of the laptop to the back of the desk freeing up valuable desk space. The detached keyboard allows the user to work in a variety of positions. The bottom sketches show a few of the original concepts and the Pro/E model from which the physical model was built.
Ergo Hairdryer - I designed this hairdryer while in school at NC State. My goal for this project was to design a hairdryer for men and women that is comfortable to use and has the same attention to detail found in other personal care appliances. The final design has a brush-like handle with buttons that are out of the way yet easy to reach. It also features a rubberized handle and removable screen for easy cleaning.
Invision Printer - The Invision 3D printer is a rapid prototyping system that uses an acrylic photopolymer resin to create models of superior quality and durability to traditional SLA parts. At 5 ft. tall it is a serious piece of machinery that is designed to feel at home on the manufacturing floor or in the office. My roles included industrial design of the pressure formed shell based on an existing design language, layout and design of the interface, and mechanical engineering of the sheet metal "cart" that supports the mechanical systems of the printer.
Clearcom Eclipse - The Eclipse is a digital intercom base station offering an industry leading 208 communication ports in a 6RU frame. It features 2 CPU card slots with 14 expansion slots and dual redundant power supplies. I was responsible for industrial design refinement and mechanical design for the plastic and many of the internal sheet metal parts. The Eclipse recieved best new product awards at the NAB 2004 and BIRTV 2004 tradeshows.
Aventail EX-1500 - Aventail wanted an iconic face for their award winning firewall software. I designed this bezel to convey a sense of security and quality, and to establish a unique brand identity that would be scalable to future products. My roles included ID concept generation, including the selected design, and the mechanical engineering of the bezel and a backlit logo powered by a custom USB cable.
