Duel Production Development See Saw - The project was designed around the needs of infants and small children and the final design had to employ two concepts, one to satisfy the commercial sector needs and one to satisfy the needs of impoverished local communities. The commercial design was built from locally source renewable commercial pine forests and standard furniture and wood fittings. The second concept was built from readily available recycled materials such as tires and rope. Both of these models where working prototypes.
Toy Design, Research Document - This project was started in 2003 at the Technikon of the Witwatersrand Product design course as a collaborative toy design workshop with N.I.D. from India. This booklet was designed to help show case the project from research and conceptualization through to testing and implementation.
Electric Toothbrush - The use of a distinct feminine form would help to differentiate the product in the market place. Functional additions to the design included a detachable battery that could be recharged without having to remove the toothbrush from the bathroom, a common complaint among users. The use of an almost entirely rubberized exterior along with the subtly twisted and flattened tube allowed for a wide range of grip positions, a must for this type product which is used in many different positions.
Compact Satellite Receiver - This designs two major constraints were cost and aesthetic appeal. The relatively simple display and interface which consisted of three LED’s, a button and a card reader slot necessitated a simple and clean design that drew on existing design trends. The numbers of components was also kept to a minium while the entire product was built out of high volume and low cost plastic injected parts.

The design required space for both a CPU, touch screen and bar-code scanner. The renderings were done to help the client chose between various concepts for production out of stainless steel.
Key Ring Remote - The designs primary focus was ergonomics, specifically looking at tactile references in the design to help the user navigate the remote’s simple interface without the need for eye contact. To this end the designs all used ways distinctly arranging the buttons in various patterns most often in specific form defined areas.
Optical Meter Reader - The optical meter reader is small portable device used to gather information from electricity meters. The design therefore had to be compact and ergonomic. An interface area was established through the use of a concave surface in which the LED’s and button where placed. The function LED’s were placed closely around the button for greater legibility. The optical reader also features an attachment point for a neck lanyard and a depressed, protected socket area for a USB interface cable.

Strike Enermax + Energy meter - The Enermax+ Energy meter is a fully programmable energy and demand meter for use in industrial and commercial environments. The meters design incorporated modular units that could be added and replaced in order to augment the meters functions and abilities in the field. The design of the enclosure also focused on improving the assembly process and cost reduction through component integration.
Slimline Energy Meter - The Enermax Slimline is the sister unit to the Enermax+. It is a slimed down and simplified energy and demand meter with applications in both the industrial and commercial sectors. The design of this enclosure focused on cost reduction through the use of shared components with Enermax+ and simplification of the assembly process.
Electrical Enclosures - The redesign of the junction box, which comprised a total of 20 model sizes, focused largely on improving the styling aspects of the box in order to help ABB create a distinct brand identity in the market place. Small improvements in the forms together with ABB’s focus on improved tooling helped to significantly reduce reject rates and keep the products competitively priced.
Electrical Accessories - Both designs were created to help establish ABB as a unique and contemporary brand in a visually stagnant market place while still being able to provided a competitive price. Both designs were highly individual and modern, yet there simple forms lent them to be adaptable to a large range of interior designs and finishes.
Satellite Decoder & DVR - The brief called for a simple and visually appealing concept that kept cost done by eliminating the need for to many additional moldings such as doors. Many of the designs actively try to consolidate the areas of interaction and use simple forms and styling that rely more on the play of light to produce interesting visual effects rather than more complex and costly combinations of materials and highly styled design.
