Tactile Subway Floor Map - My project is a tactile floor map for the NYC subway system. Currently, the subway system is not accessible to the sight-impaired. The goal of this thesis is to make it easy for the sight-impaired to navigate the subway and use it. Working with the Metropolitan Transit Authority, I developed vividly colored floor tiles that could help the sight-impaired navigate through subway stations (as well as brighten up the bleak transit system for the rest of us). The blind can use canes to read the tiles, which are concave or convex to indicate whether the train line runs uptown or downtown, and textured with dots of varying densities to indicate the letter of the subway line. The tactile floor map utilizes the textures of "tactile colors." Tactile color is a simple system of twelve standardized textures that correspond to twelve colors. The textures are added to the tactile floor map, but their scale is enlarged so that people can feel the texture through their shoes or by cane. These tactile colors guide the user along a path. http://www.metropolismag.com/html/icff_2004/Parsonsstudentwork_051704.html
