Rift is a sculptural and functional bench for indoor use. Inspired by natural formations in ever changing landscape, the bench has gentle, flowing curves broken by rifts and separation in form. Beautiful in any commercial interior, this bench adds an organic touch to an otherwise sterile environment. Taking a product like this to market could be made more cost effective through a paint finish and assembly line construction.
Fabricated entirely from 1/2" laser cut plywood, the piece was modelled in 3D software, sliced digitally, and laid out onto individual sheets. The cut pieces were glued together using various dowel rods for registration. The rough form was then hand shaped using grinding, filing, and hand sanding to achieve smooth contours. The final form was sprayed with multiple coats of lacquer.
