Chakli or Chakri, is one word which is a part of the lives of many people in India. Be it a savoury crunchy snack made of rice and dal, or a cracker that makes everybody dance to its motion, the word is embedded in Indian culture in various ways.
Inspired by its form and taking references from theme board images, a table mat made of paper chaklis was designed. Paper yarn is coiled to form circular discs which are then placed together in a square grid. These are then stitched together using transparent nylon thread to form a continuous surface.
The paper yarn used is made of different coloured papers, giving different textures in a length of yarn. This irregularity produces concentric circles of different colours when the yarn is coiled. The entire structure is foldable such that the entire mat of eighteen coils can be folded into a row of three coils. This is helpful in easy storage for the user as well as easy packaging and shipping for the company.
When paper and textiles are compared, the first point that comes ahead is the stiffness of paper as compared to the flexibility of fabric. On the contrary one of the similarities they both have is the ability to readily absorb pigments and let them flow.
Merging the properties of paper and textiles, a flexible paper tube is woven. It is inspired from the fluidity of dyes and the organic stripes of lehariya or tie and dye. The structure with woven black and white stripes, shows the transition from solid bands to irregular stripes when collapsed. Also the shape is flexible and can be shaped into different forms.
it is a woven circular tube with wires inserted at regular intervals. It is a home decor product which can be used as a vase cover, lamp, hanging decoration or simply as a collectable. The colours are very graphic and sharp. A hint of colour is added in an orange band at the bottom to pep it up. The look is very graphic and playful.
