As Xylem has large amounts of waste in the form of paper strips and rejected sheets, paper beads is one of the most successful ways employed by them to utilise it. Also they actively work with NGO’s and clusters in Delhi, who can easily produce paper beads in large numbers without much training. The fun part about the beads is that they can be used in multiple colours and prints to give an assorted look.
Using this aspect, a range of assorted tassels was designed. These are fun for the customer as well as serve the purpose of utilising waste for the company. The beads add an instant volume and colour to the tassel and can be used as decorative elements, accessories or as bookmark hangings.
Using left over materials like rexine, buttons, beads, book corner protectors, safety pins, wire, ribbons, embroidery thread and fabric pieces, decorative tassels were also designed. These are very spontaneous in nature, dependent majorly on the materials available at that time and the purpose each material could fulfill. The materials are combined together such that they complement each other’s properties.
Adding form to flat paper waste, small paper figures were designed for the export market.
