Bicidesgranadora - This is a pedal powered corn sheller. In Guatemala, traditionally corn is hand shelled by flicking the kernals of corn off with the fingers and thumb. This is a very tedious task, and can take days to complete the shelling of a harvest. For about $50 hardware stores sell a hand cranked corn sheller that will speed up the process quite a bit. Of course more power is available in the legs, and the last of the three versions that were prototyped, came in at under $100 including the junked bike parts and the sheller mechanism. As you can see we experimented with different configurations. Plastic chairs are readily and cheaply available throughout the country, and it makes sense to have the chair seperate from the power module. That way the chair can be used normally, and the sheller module can take less space. This sheller can produce about a thousand pounds of shelled corn in an average day.
Water pumps - These are two different water pumps. One is built with two toilet plungers glued together to create the diaphram. The diaphram takes the place of a piston and the associated wear surfaces. The result is a suction pump that creates pressure, and can be used for regular domestic needs. It can be used to fill up an elevated holding tank, or a hose can be attached for agricultural purposes. The other pump is designed to go on the end of a hose, and was designed for spot irrigation. It also makes a nice supersoaker. Here is a video of my latest pump design: http://video.google.com/videosearch?q=soda+bottle+water+pump+playable%3Atrue
Bent-ply Chair - This is a bent ply chair designed and built a couple of years ago simply for the joy of it. It is symmetrical!
Various projects - Starting in the top left corner and going clockwise; A necklace made of silver and wood, a design for a chair to be made by a carpenters co-op in Guatemala, a bowl made in a glass blowing class, and a room divider screen design. The necklace and the room divider explore the concept of interwovenness. The chair is designed to maximize the number of common parts. The seat and the back use the same two components.
Clean mini environment - This depicts a product that was designed while I was employed with Intelligent Enclosures. It is a mini environment of the type used in the semiconductor manufacturing industry. It was designed to be modular, and to provide a particle free environment for the enclosed process. I was deeply involved in the design of this successfull product.
