Wireframe Visualisation of the most important 'Red-routes' of the application found through UX design and research
Paper prototype
To test the app as early as possible I made a paper prototype of the initial idea. It is very insightful to 'use' the app and then see what works (and what doesn't) in a very early stage of the process.
Several (5) users were asked to use the paper prototype and the main hick-ups were addressed in the next concept / model
Contextual research spending a day in the actual zoo. Talking to visitors and employees and also sitting down and look, observe. I sat across from the entrance and the shop where you buy the map. I could see how people got into the zoo, were lost (or knew exactly where to go) went into the shop, bought a map and then tried to decide where to go (and where they were). After a while I could also recognize several categories of visitors with each their particular characteristics and needs. These would create the foundation for the persona's and user scenario's I would create later on. I also investigated what people wanted to find. What was their purpose in the Zoo? What did they need?
UX design - persona's and user scenarios making sense of all the insights found in the contextual research (field research). I created persona's and pointed out the main user scenario's.
Persona First sketch-up of the main persona
Red Routes These are the most important functions the app should have for most of the users. Red Routes help you prioritise functionalities in the application you are designing. First make sure your red routes add up and work, then elaborate to other functions.
First (paper) Prototype Creating the first paper prototype. (see video above), to catch wrong assumptions in a early stage.
User research With the help of the paper prototype a preliminary user research took place. First hick-ups were written down. On this picture the are categorised into groups to point out the main issues to address.
