Urban Design Filmmaking Workshop

An elective workshop with undergraduate students of architecture which aimed to move them from simplistic totaliarian definitions of place and introduce them to the critical debate on space and place, and the role of time in shaping the latter. Students were exposed to a series of exercises, maps, pictures, sounds and videos wherein they were made to dislodge their preconceptions of place and how it could be represented.
The intention of the exercise was to force these budding architects out of the absolute focus on built form as the central component of place and to recognize the role of the unbuilt, sensorial and ephemeral components of places in shaping their perception. As a submission, students were then asked to make an experiential document...a film, 3 and a half to 10 minutes long on 4 'places' in Goa: Chorao, Panjim, Margao and Morjim…
Each group was asked to capture their respective places as 'time', as 'texture' , as 'fast moving urban scenery' and as 'memories'
