Cushion and Frame

The inspiration for this chair came from my mother and her love of sitting on the floor. The project started with a Rhino model and iterations, but was soon followed by the construction of a massive steam bending jig. The oak was then steamed and bent one piece at a time. The spindles were hand turned and the leather stretching molds were made. Then the leather was soaked and stretched over these forms and let dry. After the oak was laminated and the holes drilled, the webbing was stretched and synched taught with a band of aluminium. Following the polyurethaning of the oak, the hardware was inserted and the spindles were tightened into the base and hand shaped rail. The leather was then sewn and the foam was inserted.
