The Old Bookshop, Buckinghamshire

Contemporary Extension to a 17th Century Grade II Listed Village House
Completed 2009, Private Client

Situated in the heart of a beautiful Buckinghamshire village, this 17th Centrury house had seen many changes over the years. The front façade had been rebuilt during the Georgian period and, later, for much of the late 20th Century, the ground floor was used as the village Bookshop. The Bookshop closed in 1999 and the property lay empty and rapidly fell into disrepair. Our brief was to turn the former Bookshop into a family home. Our response was to reorder the spaces and to re-orientate the rooms of the house away from the road and toward the beautiful cottage garden.

Our design approach was cohesive: the desire was to create an ‘inside – outside’ space and we achieved this by giving equal importance to architectural, interior and landscape designs.
