Battle of the Bands - The Times co-sponsored, with the United Way, a battle of the bands in Valparaiso, Ind. A small group of us were tasked with developing a full-fledged profile site for the dozen competing groups. Each band was allowed to add photos, video, downloads, social media and text to their profiles, one of which can be seen here. I designed all the HTML, CSS and javascript for this micro-site. Technology used: HTML, CSS, javascript/jQuery, PHP URL: http://nwi.com/battle
Floods revisited - This interactive map used lots of Google Earth imagery to explain the 2008 flooding of the Little Calumet River. A version of this graphic also appeared in print. Technology used: Flash URL: http://www.nwitimes.com/app/multimedia/interactive/extras/floodmap/
Rising grocery prices - I could have just made a list of grocery items and their rising costs. Instead, I made a quiz. Technology used: Flash URL: http://nwitimes.com/app/multimedia/interactive/grocerytrip/
Caged-in.com - When The Times' mixed martial arts blogger (and design director) Matt Erickson wanted a revamp of his site, he turned to me for a raw, MMA-worthy design. Deployed by Times Online Editor Chris Keller, this structure and look is of my own design. Technology used: HTML, CSS, WordPress URL: caged-in.com
Mosaic - This is a landing page for our occasional series on cultures. Technology used: Flash, xml URL: nwi.com/mosaic
Post Office timed - To launch an occasional consumer watchdog series, The Times mailed hundreds of parcels to and from nine different cities and measured the transit time. This interactive graphic breaks down the data into small components. Technology used: Flash URL: http://www.nwitimes.com/app/multimedia/interactive/postal/
Video presentation - From time to time we deem a video project worthy of a little extra presentation. This is an example of a simple video page. Technology used: HTML, CSS URL: http://www.nwitimes.com/app/multimedia/special/trauma_video/
100 years of Indiana basketball - The only thing Hoosiers love more than racing is high school basketball. To commemorate the 100th boys basketball state tournament, we put out a special section (main page seen at top) the primary component of which was a capsule description of every year (seen above). Technology used: HTML, CSS, PHP, jQuery URL: http://nwitimes.com/100-state-tournaments
Indie Synergy - Video journalist Christopher Smith (now with RedEye) and I crafted this site which profiled local bands who are proud to shun Chicago for Northwest Indiana. At top is the landing page. Below that is a profile with featured video, links, mp3 downloads and links to more video. Technology used: HTML, CSS, PHP, ajax URL: http://www.nwitimes.com/app/multimedia/interactive/indiesynergy/
Sin Strip - This in-depth profile of a once famous stretch of State Street in Calumet City, Ill., was a smashing success. Using copious media, this micro-site told a rich story of the neighborhood's heyday, decline and burgeoning resurrection. Technology used: HTML, CSS, javascript, Flash, php URL: http://nwitimes.com/sinstrip
Sin Strip virtual tour - Using a multitude of bite-sized media of all types, I devised this interactive map which let the user explore for himself or herself the once-hopping hangout. Technology used: HTML, CSS, Flash, javascript URL: http://nwitimes.com/app/sinstrip/virtualtour/
Common sports injuries - In conjunction with our sports medicine columnist, I crafted this page highlighting many of the most common sports injuries (seen at top). Each item included a detailed description of the problem and a medical diagram of the joint (seen above). Technology used: HTML, CSS, ajax URL: http://www.nwitimes.com/app/multimedia/interactive/sportsinjuries
Subprime loans - This data-driven graphic combines mortgage data from two different years and breaks it all down by race. Technology used: PHP, xml, Flash URL: http://nwitimes.com/news/multimedia/data-center/html_08d64ff6-2818-11df-bb19-001cc4c002e0.html
Site mock-up - This is an Adobe Illustrator mockup for a redesign of our real estate portal. The primary task was to put our search module and advertisers front and center, above the fold. Anything else was added-value icing on the cake.
