Montgomery unit E-1 - ONE BEDROOM - Montgomery unit E-1 ( FALL 2003) This project was the design of a "home & studio" for a young designer. My client liked modern, simple and neat style. He liked glass material, so I tried to take his taste as much as I can while designing the space. According to his preference and life style, I mainly focused on the flexibility of the space. For that point of view, I used glass sliding doors.
KITCHEN RENOVATION - KITCHEN RENOVATION - Pike House by David Adler (SPRING 2003) The pike house, designed by David Adler is historically very important and famous in Chicago's history of Architecture. So it is very difficult to change the original design. But the owner of this house wanted to redesign only the kitchen in very modern and comfortable style. For designing, I broke the inside wall, but I should keep the exterior such as windows and doorways. The house is very classical overall, but the client wanted to have modern-styled kitchen, which made me design the interior space with minimalism.
FASHION RETAIL SHOP - FASHION RETAIL SHOP - Andre Kim : Korean fashion designer (SPRING 2002) For this project, I chose 'Andre Kim', the most famous fashion designer in Korea for my client. His style is very mysterious, elegant, and feminine. His favorite color was white. So, I used 'white' for the main color of the space. In addition, his fabrics were very unique, so I wanted to display the main theme fabrics for window display, instead of newly designed clothes. This will make people more curious, mysterious, as is his design. Fabric-front window display: From outside, people can see the main theme fabrics of his design and expect what would be crucial in his new design concept.
WOODEN STOOL - FURNITURE DESIGN - WOODEN STOOL ( FALL 2002) This furniture was my first wood-made project. I designed this little stool for every modern place applicable. Simple, basic shape will easily fit in everywhere. Because of the wooden material, it might not look very cool despite of the modern style and simple design. Two side lines that are slightly angled are the interesting point of this stool. MATERIAL : Multi-ply wood JOINT : Edge- to - Edge Joint by Biscuit and nails SIZE : Top 12" x 13", Height 18" I designed gaps on both side of the stool as handles, which enables us to moving it easily. The layers of multi-ply wood function as patterns on the simple stool. Slightly-angled-lines on both sides make the simple design more fun.
Korean CHURCH-thesis project - CHURCH-thesis project (SPRING 2004) : Korean Church in Chicago GALLERY - during the weekdays, the building is opened for public events Church is not just a place for "Sunday service" any more. It serves as a center of information to get essential helps for living in a foreign country for all immigrants. As the number of immigrants from Korea increases in Chicago, stronger bondage of Korean community in the great Chicagoland area is necessary, which motivated me to work on new type of Church in Korean town. Also, through the site , I want to introduce Korea and Korean culture to others living here. The site of the church is perfect for Korean-American community's gathering, because of Korean grocery market next to the church is currently used by many Koreans from IL, MI, IN, OH. I designed a new type of church based on a concept, 'water' which represents 'purity' from sacred and pure religious aspect. To develop my idea, I basically divided the church into two spaces such as 'FLUID space(water, steam)' and 'SOLID space(ice), according to the movement of people.
