Ideation Sketching - I started with extensive research and sketching. My first concept (bottom) was a simple bent wood folding low chair for camping or picnics.
Final Concept/Material Study - My final concept came to be known as the "Snake Chair" because of the second sketch. This was a small stool that would fold up small enough to fit in a regular sized backpack.
Detailing/Mechanical Exploration - The mechanical nature of this chair led to many hours of figuring out which hardware to use. The chair required a mix of custom milled brackets, and off the shelf hinges.
Foamcore Appearance and Wood Functional Models - A foamcore appearance model, and a functional wood model. These helped me evaluate the necessary cutouts/tolerancing, and stress requirements of the materials.
Final Functional Chair in Bamboo - I made the final (functional) prototype out of bamboo plywood.
