For our senior year sponsored project we were given a project from Oakely. They were thinking of going into the free diver market and wanted our class to do some research and come up with a final design at the end of the semester. Here are but a few exploratory sketches in that endeavor. I decided to go with a design that Oakely ventured upon only briefly in the form of round sunglasses. I wanted the user to have a clear view all around as much as possible.
I was watching too much star-trek or something on most of these. I did not want the goggles to just wrap-around the face but I wanted some element to perhaps migrate upwards and become some design element for the forehead or other parts of the skull. Unnecessary? yes, Cool design ? possibly.
Here I wanted the "bone" look. I took some obscure design element from the Oakely catalog and went exploring.
This is were it must have been late and the caffeine was wearing off......
In this sketch, especially in the snorkel profile, I wanted an over lapping and "reinforced" look. I also tried to add the "bone" look to parts of the mouth piece.
This skull was an actual skull that I pulled from Oakelys web site. Here, early on I was almost set to go with a round design for the goggles.
Here is the final mock-up at the beach. Again the Large "view ports" for better underwater viewing. The strap has a "click and tuck type design to secure the goggles to the head.
