unclear power - The 50’s brought the promise of a new clean energy source: atomic energy. But now after years of implementation, how successful has this been. Is nuclear power truly safe? This project focuses on this controversial issue. Is it greenhouse safe? What are the costs? And what is its record of safety? How vulnerable are the plants? What is in place for the management of highly radioactive waste materials? Are there alternatives?

unclear power spread: chernobyl - Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant Reactor 4 suffered a catastrophic steam explosion, causing flames and 190 tons of radioactive uranium and graphite into the air that quickly caused multiple fires and explosions. Soon after the plant had a nuclear meltdown. Ironically, the cause of the meltdown happened during a routine safety exercise.
unclear power spread: liquidators - Liquidators, the name given in the former USSR for approximately 600,000 people who were in charge of the removal were also conscripted to the clean up and were exposed to the radiation. Since the accident 13,000 liquidators have died. Liquidators who have died from the disaster are buried in coffins lined with lead to prevent the spread of radiation into the ground.
unclear power spread: generation of deformities - The aftermath of Chernobyl is still currently affecting local Ukrainians, Russians and Belarusians. Future generations will continue to develop deformities. There are 4,000 cases of thyroid cancer in children, and congenital birth defects have increased by 250%. Maternal exposure to radiation also caused serve defects on unborn children.
unclear power spread: contamination effects everyone - The reactors meltdown caused a radioactive cloud that soon spread across Europe. The Cloud from the reactor spread numerous types of radioactive materials especially iodine and cesium radionuclide. The largest accounts of radionuclide occurred over large areas of the Soviet Union, as well as in what is now the countries of Belarus, the Russian Federation and Ukraine. Over the next 48 hours most of the radiation was cast over Europe from wind patterns, moving as far as Norway and Sweden.
