The Cup Tree is largely responsible for the conception of the HALO collection. It was inspired by Naoto Fukasawa’s innate ability to create design solutions with a humanistic and playful eye. In this instance we’ve taken a familiar kitchen object and put a slight twist on it. Rather than hanging the cups, the dowel handles are inserted into ceramic inserts arranged symmetrically around the ‘trunk’ of the tree. The oak serves as a warm, tactile handle and features a dished top that invites the users thumb to rest on it and play with it. While the trunk itself persuades you to replace the cup when you are finished and complete the piece. Awareness of material transition and contrast as a design feature is very evident in this piece where circles and cylinders of wood and ceramic encounter one another with a powerful elegance.
A solid, robust and hard wearing cutting board should be at the heart of every kitchen. This is where each meal begins in it’s raw form. The spacious oak chopping surface willwithstand years of continued use while complementing the HALO knife range harmoniously. The edges of the board are gently curved allowing for easy lifting but maintaining stability. When standing on it’s side the curve also helps to minimise contact with other surfaces reducing drying time. The most unique feature of the HALO cuttingboard is the rubber bumper that surrounds the solid oak slab. This not only helps to protect the board and countertop in the event of a drop, it also increases the board’s stability when being stored. The rubber grips the surface it is placed on as the board leans against a wall or a cupboard. The HALO logo has been carefully inserted into the board in the form o fa ceramic emblem. An example of exquisite detailing.
The HALO knife set is a contemporary take on traditional Japanese cutlery design that has it’s roots laid deep in the 14th Century. The end of World War II brought with it an influence on the design of Japanese cutlery and a rise in the popularity of the Santoku - a take on the French chef’s knife. The HALO set combines more familiar Western knife design and contemporary production methods with well balanced and the carefully considered proportions expected of the Japanese approach. Steel has been replaced by white ceramic, famed for it durability and sharpness, and merged with Oak handles. The softened profiles ensure prolonged comfort and great tactility.
A good set of knives needs a home. The HALO Knife Block has been specially crafted to accept each knife perfectly. Each slot is sized accordingly with curved edges that hold the ceramic blade perfectly in place. The core of the block is precision machined from solid oak. The bottom heavy taper ensures stability and gives the piece a confidant and steadfast appearance despite the softened form. The oak core is encased in a white ceramic sleeve, contrasting elegantly with the natural wood finish. The edges of the ceramicmeet a meniscus of the timber before rolling down into the dished top surface. As with the pieces in the HALO series, no surface or viewpoint has gone unconsidered. We were careful to ensure that each piec would be strong enough to be appreciated on it’s own as well as being part of a cohesive collection
The Mortar and Pestal have been designed with hard usage in mind. These pieces need to be solid and robust while the form needs to remain easy on the hands. A softened inner radius allows for a comfortable thumb grip over the ceramic mortar. Also, the curved oak base allows it to be rolled onto it’s side for ease of use. The pestal features a domed top that fits snugly into the palm of the hand. The softened rectangular profile gently progresses down to a solid ceramic base highlighting a beautiful transition of material and of form.
The shaker set has been constructed using the same principals as the HALO knife block. At the core is a solid wood piece that has been crafted into soft, rounded form. The top surface is gently domed while the more bulbous base features a scoop detail that presents a moulded rubber cap. A ceramic sleeve is then fitted over the wood creating a snug fit between the two materials; forming a halo.

HALO - Kitchenware

The HALO kitchenware collection is the manifestaion of a fascination with and appreciation of Japanese and Scandanavian design. While both are unique in their own respects, they share many profound principals that have become an integral part of my design ethos.

The HALO collection can be characterized by simple, honest designs and a pure aesthetic. At the core of each product is honesty, interms of the design language, the material selection and the execution of detail.

We have paid huge attention to the usability of each object, the touch and feel of every surface, inviting to user to explore it’s form by sight and by touch. No surface is left unconsidered.
