I was asked by Director Keith Bearden from the movie Miss January to create this sculpture from a small photograph. I used a Polystyrene and clay to create this character. The main casting role was Kim Cattrall.
The sculpture strongly reflects the “mammy” caricature, depicting a Black woman with a headscarf, broad smile, exaggerated features, and domestic clothing in a welcoming, servile posture—an image rooted in historical stereotypes of Black women as content domestic workers.
