Holiday Windows 2015

Mirror backed colored acrylic. Plywood. Electric Motors and Gearing.

Each of these three 58th st windows prominently featured a pair of stacked counter-rotating stars as their center focal point. As the stars rotate, the reflected light creates a mesmerizing visual experience.

The faceted surfaces were designed around a lightweight plywood superstructure skinned with a mitered and folded thin plywood. This provided a base to mount the Acrylic which was miter cut and heat folded in a similar manner. With the exception of the motor mounts, all parts were designed in Solidworks and CNC cut in house.

Special attention in the design needed to be paid to the existing windows dimensions, especially the prosceniums which exhibited various irregularities. To this end, extensively detailed measurements were taken of the windows, and their facsimiles were used as a foundation in the CAD draftings.
