Integrated Engineering Design

Design of a Solenoid Piston Pump for manufacturing that will be used as a medical device pumping water with a constant flow rate of 0.5 l/min.

The design will be insensitive to manufacture and operational environments. Initial analysis was carried out looking at process capability, factors that affect flow rate, the golden ratio, and the different loading scenarios the pump could potentially be under.

Next, the manufacturing risk was analysed by doing a risk assessment on each part and going through a failure modes and effects analysis.

Once that was completed, robust design was looked at by the Taguchi method.

Meanwhile, the probabilistic design was used to calculate the estimated loading and conduct reliability testing.

With a basic design complete, a 3-D model was created in CAD and simulated as a basic verification of the design.

The last step included DVT, HALT and HASS.
