Veterans Rehabilitation Center

Using evidence-based design methodology, this project involved creating an outpatient rehabilitation center for wounded veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. The program included public areas to encourage community and family members to become involved in the healing process. Cognitive issues that come with traumatic brain injuries and agoraphobia had to be addressed. Easy way-finding was created by utilizing a primary circulation spine to the north that linked all programmatic areas together. This circulation area allows the user to be oriented to the various interior functions, exterior, and easy means of egress in case of panic attacks. Sustainability was also a primary concern to make this project healthy for staff, caregivers, patients, and the environment.
