"Within the Lion" This is an oil painting where I sought to reveal the inner traits of a lion through the use of strong, representational colors. I used yellow and red the most to represent his majestic and instinct traits respectively. I made the shadow of his mane blue to represent his authority. The face utilizes more warm colors to form the shape and the background contrasts by being more black and red, to represent the ruthless connotations that make up the lion's image by society.
"Untitled (Korean Migrant Worker)" The migrant workers in Korea are being exploited. The Korean government forced migrant workers who had lived in Korea for over 4 years to leave due to the Employment Permit System. Korea is seeking new workers who are not accustomed to Korea and its laws to exploit and take advantage of. That is why I painted this work of an assassination photo, because the migrant workers are being targeted by the Korean government.
"Dear Shoes" I drew this black and white pencil image in my free time. My shoes have held a dear spot in my heart ever since I nearly lost my shoes to a mud swamp when I was a small boy. Even though the shoes were filthy, I wanted to keep them forever to retain the memory I had of saving my shoes. Alas, my parents eventually threw them away, but I can keep this new pair of shoes with me even as it deteriorates through my artistic abilities.
"Blue" I painted this cat at home using only the blue color to represent the emotions tied to loneliness. Blue is a cold color that, when combined with white, reminds me of winter. Loneliness is a lack of energy, a loss of the warmth of others, which is why I used dots in the background to subtly hint of winter to the viewer.
"Untitled (Emotional Conflict)" I painted this acrylic work in school in an attempt to represent the emotional conflict that occurs in all people. We all experience anger, joy, and apathy. These emotions can at times swirl within us and struggle to surface against the competing emotions. I painted these faces to represent these emotions.
"Untitled (Passion)" Passion is a word that is often talked about and sought after in society. I strove to capture the image of passion as I understood it in this painting I created in class. I used warm colors like pink and yellow to bring out the energy found in passion. I also thought of how when I have been passionate, the world around me disappears. In following this idea, I separated the background from the foreground by using my palette knife to paint a messy and unfocused background.
"Trumpet" In class, I was given a trumpet and the instructions to turn it into a work of art. After a period of brainstorming I came to create a flying trumpet rocket in space that is depicted dimetrically as squares that may rise or fall to form depth.
"Compositional Collapse" I created this compositionally driven pen drawing to represent the the collapse of order. In my mind, the first thing I associate with order is factories which is why I arranged letters to form a tower with a chimney on top to represent the order of this image. then I had these letters collapse and be absorbed into the distance as free-flowing letters. The letters lose their rigidness and there curved letters appear in as they approach the black hole in the back of the picture.
"Sea Life" I painted this octopus in my free time with the intent to use warm colors to show the warmth of sea life. When I imagine the deep sea, I see bright glowing colors swirling around the sea life in the deep depths of the ocean. This may not be realistic, but I wanted to bring beauty and appreciation for sea life with this work.
"Untitled (Cat in Purple)" I painted this cat eating a delicious fish at the end of my spring break because I didn't want to finish my break without painting. The painting is relatively big compared to most of my paintings and yet is the only canvas work that I finished in the span of three days. I focused the details on the fish and the cat's face. The cat's orange pelt contrasts well with the dark purple of the background.
