City of Jyväskylä hold a competition to find a work of light art for the Main library of Jyväskylä. We won the competition with our proposal “Lastu”.

The inspiration for this artwork came from the history of Jyväskylä and its main library as the cradle of education and literature as well as the future of the library as a community-gathering place in the age of digitalization. The title of the work “Lastu” has been inspired by the first Finnish language short stories, “chips”, developed by professional writer Juhani Aho. The name and form of the work emphasize written tradition. The technology used in lighting implementation reflects modernity and digitalization.

The installation consists of 22 pieces of thermoplastic acrylic sheets. A top-down video projector illuminates the work with live-captured video, which is stylized with effects. The lighting reacts to visitors passing it.
