Upcycled Art

This work uses discarded and dismantled 3.5" diskettes as a way to encourage new ideas for disposing of the e-waste we create. A disk may be a small item on its own, but multiplied by the volume sold in its heyday, a potentially huge source of waste. The 3.5" Diskette became my symbol for the waste dumps of electronic materials in Asia and Africa sent there by the U.S.A., Europe, and other developed nations.
I see these pieces as potential corporate art to encourage conversations among technology developers about the end-of life of their products when creating new technologies. I also invite consumers to seek out the most environmentally and socially responsible way to deal with obsolete computer, television, and media equipment. Salutes go to groups like Pennsylvania Resources Council, Goodwill of Southwestern Pennsylvania, and Construction Junction for taking on what huge waste companies and slow-moving municipal governments have not.
