Liqui-Box creates machines that package liquid products like soda syrup, soft serve and wine into a bag within a box. The paramount goal and challenge in our industrial design effort was that this new product would define a new striking company brand language launch all Liqui-Box future product-line styling. They challenged us to design this new machinery guarding to emote a feeling of being advanced, intuitive, reliable, clean, responsive, and fast while allowing for design longevity.
While design is very important, Liqui-Box also needed innovative engineering to revamp their automated bag-strip filling and boxing machines for a global market so they entrusted Studio Red with the challenging task of creating this complex machinery as modular, configurable and work-flow-optimized while being quick to set up and easy to change over.
Liquibox wanted to introduce a new family line of fillers, branded so that each unit had common features that will be recognizable as a “Liqui-Box filler”. We skillfully executed an all new brand language for their future product line that portrays a cutting edge, clean and sanitary feeling while still implementing modular and versatile aspects. The new design makes the complex machinery simple to operate, intuitive to use and hides the inner complexities while allowing easy access for maintenance.
Design longevity is important. We knew that this new look needed to be timeless since this product’s lifespan is 10-20 years, so we dressed the machinery in clean stainless steel with crisp edges and horizontal accents of reflective light. The colored LED lighting doubles as machine-status indicators. As a highlighted focal point, the brilliant colored LEDs reflect off the 5WL embossed sheet metal in a sparkling manner.

StudioRed’s team engineered the guarding surrounding the filler systems, conveyors, access requirements and liquid handling. The guarding and doors met stringent wash down method requirements, were designed for easy maintenance and implemented redundant safety sensors. Our design also includes LED lighted zones that can be seen across the production floor which allow for a clear communication of the machine’s work-status through color change. StudioRed’s work was delivered to the contract manufacturer who then deployed it into production.

Our team visited dairy and wine factories utilizing filler equipment and assessed the user’s professional needs on at a personal level. This exercise revealed many human-to-machine interaction issues that could only be recognized in person.
