Hyperion Tree With SPMD

For this project, SPMD was tasked with developing a public art and art curation plan for large portions of Google’s Bay View Campus. As part of that, the Design Engineering team under my direction developed the “Hyperion Tree”, a 45 foot tall sculptural column cover that wraps the one of the tent like buildings main support columns. Consisting of 11 millwork boxes stacked in a twisting form, the installation is printed and hand painted with 4 artists' interpretation of a redwood temperate rainforest. As part of this install, we needed to develop a fire resistant composite material to construct the boxes out of that wouldn’t interfere with the fire rating and intumescent coating of the column, and designed and tested a system using aluminum cladding on the interior of the boxes along with intermittent fire breaks. It was tested and received agency approval by the land owner and approval agency, which in the case of this site, was NASA. With Jesus Gonzales and Ashley Hetrick
