I am minoring in photography: this was my earliest project. We were actually supposed to go beyond just getting a good picture of ourselves: we were supposed to capture some aspect of our personality in it, if possible. There was a fair amount of experimenting before I found the right lighting conditions for this, and some debate as to the final form.
