Major Project Final Year BSc (Hons) - Indiegrow

Indiegrow was inspired by first hand research from living in the city of Tacloban in the Philippines where Typhoon Haiyan hit in 2013. The project came to light when identifying that poor nutrition was a key problem after natural disasters and within densely populated communities.

The product allows families living in poverty to be able to create their own vertical gardening system to produce nutritious food on their doorstep. It is a farming alternative when land is limited that utilises local materials in South East Asia. The system conserves precious water through combining a water capture system, a recyclable water supply and using coconut coir as a growing media.

Indiegrow is a kit that will be sent out after a natural disaster to aid long term food security issues. The kit contains instructions of how to build, seeds and the handheld water pump.
