Design Objective: Most color-changing LED pool lights operate by cycling power off and on to advance through a series of preprogrammed colors and scenes. These can be controlled by a standard light switch, a stand alone light control, or incorporated into a full pool automation system. Compact stand alone lighting controls were introduced only recently to the pool industry. Those currently offered on the market are difficult to use and lack a full range of features. How can we provide an attractive lighting automation solution that will easily install on almost any pool and improve the overall user experience?
Mood Board & Ideation: We looked to personal electronic devices for inspiration on interface and aesthetic design, and chose to utilize an LCD screen for an improved user experience. To capture sales in the renovation market it needed to directly replace a standard light switch in a single gang box.
Prototypes: Paper and foam core sketch models were made to test button layouts and knob designs. Ultimately we chose to simplify the physical interface by reducing the number of physical buttons and including more functionality into the software.
