I have been designing professionally since 1996. As a modern illustrator/painter/musician, I feel I'm very in tune with trends, especially with inner city youth due to the fact that I am that demographic. There are plenty of designers who can connect the dots and cross the tees, but an artist who can think independently, work well with others, and provide a wealth of fresh ideas is definitely an important resource for any design company.
