    • Senior Design Manager
      Manumetal
      Kigali, Rwanda
      2009 - 2011 (2 years)
Built an in-house design team through the selection and mentoring of three Rwandan engineers in design thinking and practice. Led the team to design the award winning Manumetal furniture trade-fair stand for the Rwanda Business Expo 2009. Designed custom interiors, furniture items and other special-projects including a secure cash handling system for a national bank, and a boat-boarding system for a head of state.
    • Design Consultant
      TechnoServe
      Kigali, Rwanda
      2008 - 2011 (3 years)
Designed, prototyped and documented a tool-kit for an improved low-cost coffee processing wet-mill system for the Technoserve Coffee Initiative. As a core component of the $45M Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation funded project, I designed the tool-kit to be scaled and customized to suit specific locations by non-technical users. Farmers received between 2 to 5 times the return on their coffee fruit in the first year due to the resulting improvement in bean quality and profit sharing structure. The tool-kit has now been successfully rolled out across East Africa in 123 locations, benefiting 95,483 people.

Developed curricula for the Industrial Design and Design Thinking courses for the newly created Bachelor of Science in Creative Design. This is Rwanda's first and only design degree. Taught the two courses for the inaugural class of 25 students, where I focused on nurturing the students to develop a rich design process that considers the user, manufacturing constraints, environment impacts and economic implications.
