Design is something that excites me; with no two briefs ever being the same the challenge of something new motivates me, ensuring I am able to solve the design problem to the best of my ability with constant improvements being made to my design skills. This fixation drives me on, to succeed in the industry, growing as a designer and gaining experience in the business world.

Up until recently i was working for a design company called Cognoscenti. This was a small but well established company which designed bespoke point of purchase displays for blue chip brands. Here I designed units as diverse as drinks trolley’s for Odeon and Vue cinemas to floor stands and hero units for Airfix. Being the only designer at Cognoscenti, my role involved designing, visualising and preparing engineering drawings for manufacture. I was responsible for communicating directly with clients and attending meetings. I also liaised with the manufacturers on a technical basis and prepared cost sheets for each project. The company unfortunately was forced into liquidation on 2 November.

During my experience at this company I feel that I have grown more confident in client liaison, understanding design briefs and costing projects which has lead to always receiving good client feedback. I’m seeking to extend my experience by working as part of a design team.

An insight into what goes into the design and production of a F1 car. This included watching the various technicians at work producing and testing the many components, been shown the various materials used and understanding why these particular materials were chosen as well as getting first hand experience of the manufacturing and production processes. Within this I got the unique opportunity to try my skills in the Spray-booth, help assemble a gearbox and engine, work with carbon fibre to create items using their autoclaves and help on the assembly line of their road car, the Mercedes SLR McLaren. I also got to meet the drivers (Alonso and Hamilton) as well as Ron Dennis, the CEO at that time.
