Jacob Howell has a decade of diverse product development and project management experience coupled with strategic project planning and innovative consumer product design. His breath of work ranges from backyard games, Preschool Toys, and sporting goods to radiology products and includes co-developing his own product "The DuoScreen" shown in USA Today and PCGAMER. He has worked with high-profile companies including Dicks sporting goods, Step2, and Tupperware as well as brands including Nickelodeon, Disney, Polaroid, Gillette, and Field and stream. Acting as a lead designer, Jake has teamed up with several well-known design firms such as Bally Design, Teams Design, and Beyond design in collaboration to produce compelling products that meet the needs of all stakeholders.

Jake's product design sensibility and well-known idea generation tactics have led to his success in developing several new sports games, such as Pong Peak and Hooking Halos sold at dicks sporting goods, as well as invent the new backyard tailgate game “Bounce Back” coming to stores next fall. His knowledge of mechanics can be seen in the new line of action shooting targets that he invented and designed for Field and Stream. Using a consumer-focused approach, he was able to design, develop and launch the new Prince brand of table tennis tables along with an innovative accessory line. Jake has worked in Asia with factories side by side to see a host of these products all the way through manufacturing.

Jake holds a bachelor's degree from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh in Industrial Design, a certificate in visual communication from the Livonia Technical center, and a certificate in Human-centered design from the Luma Institute. As an instructor, Jake taught Inventor 3D modeling and adobe illustrator along with 3D printing and Laser cutting basics at TechShop. He finds creative inspiration and practical experience through cooking, model making, and the adventures of being a dad!

      Pittsburgh, PA
      Jan 2015 - Present (11 years 6 months)
As the project lead for the camping and sport games categories I design and develop new products for Dicks sporting goods private brands including Field & Stream, Quest, Adidas baseball, and Carrie Underwood’s fitness brand CALIA. The products and Ideas I create are designed to solve a problem and inspire positive action for the consumer. This process is achieved through idea and concept design iteration, prototyping and validating ideas, delivering DFM CAD data, CMF refinement and encompassing the visual brand language into the end product. I then handle the communication of engineering drawings or tech packs to foreign and domestic factories to see the project through from the beginning to end. This process allows me to hold design intent and provide the optimal product for all stake holders and consumers alike.
