My background includes over two decades serving as Art Director, Senior Graphic Designer, and Senior Project Manager with many large agencies and companies including Revlon Professional Brands®, BrandonTaylor Communications on San Diego Gas & Electric® and Sempra Energy®, MJE Marketing on the Port of San Diego® & Sandag® advertising accounts, among others. More recently Senior Packaging Designer for Underground Toys, working on and with such licenses as Disney®, Star Wars®, Marvel®, DC®, Harry Potter®, and many others. Presently I am a freelance Art Director/Senior Graphic Designer specializing in packaging design and print. Given the large volume of work, and the extensive range of print and digital mediums used, I’ve been privy to the best technologies needed to meet the highest quality graphic design and art creation standards for production of all types. In addition, my work with many of the region’s top designers and directors has allowed me to advance my art and design skills to a quality level of excellence.

Usually I brainstorm, design and re-design concepts based on product needs. I help the company meet marketing requirements by creating attractive packaging for products using creative software. My strong interpersonal skills are often necessary, because as a package designer I work with accountants and business professionals alike to create cost-effective packaging that meets consumer demands. I also work with copywriters, marketing experts and other designers to ensure that my packaging meets branding requirements and suits target audiences.
I begin the design process by meeting with the core company team to develop an understanding of their packaging needs. I then assess consumer tastes, market trends and product details to conceptualize package designs. Together, we determine how to meet goals pertaining to cost, safety and branding. Sometimes I spend time conducting additional research and meeting with suppliers or consumer groups to develop ideas.
Next, I illustrate their ideas. I use design software to create digital drafts. After I have developed and edited a design, I again meet with the core company team to gather additional feedback. The process of re-designing continues until we as a whole are satisfied with the design.
I then create a packaging prototype that can be analyzed by all pertinent parties. In some cases I work with engineers, consumer safety groups and accountants to ensure the prototype is safe and cost effective. If standards are not met, re-designs may be required. When a packaging design gets final approval, it goes into production. -
