Editorial CartoonistChicago Sun-Times NewspaperChicago, ILFeb 2007 - Jan 2009 (1 year 11 months)I worked on contract for one of the two primary newspapers in Chicago during the ramp-up to the Obama election in November, 2007. My contract was for 3—5 cartoons per week. I work from my studio in the city and sometimes would find myself delivering a last-minute assignment by hopping a cab.. Editorial meetings were held every morning. Meantime, I would read from multiple news sources, trying to get a jump on the topic of the day. Around 11am I would get a call from my page editor who would share the cover story of the day. I normally had from 11am to 2pm to prepare sketches. The chosen concept was delivered as finished art by 4pm daily. The press run was 4:30. Frequently, the editors would be at a press conference until 3 pm. My shortest deadline for final art was 20 minutes.

Editorial IllustratorThe Chicago Reader NewspaperChicago, ILMar 1975 - Oct 1991 (16 years 7 months)This weekly newspaper (circulation about 20,000) was an edgy version of the daily tabloids. I started out doing spot illustrations for the 'Reading' column and worked my way to front page cover illustrations. I reported directly to the publisher and eventually developed a following of people who recognized my black and white pen and ink style. Since this job lasted more than 15 years, I was able to experiment with drawing approaches that fit with the individual writer/contributors' work. Deadlines in tabloid publishing are tight— I would receive the text to read on a Wednesday with the finished art due the next evening. Each week's edition was drop-shipped by Friday afternoon. This schedule gave me an opportunity to illustrate stories, reviews, and commentaries in a more serious style than the cartoonist.
