HD UHC alert sketches. One of the challenges was to see the alerts from a distance, and at awkward angles.
After several research sessions observing how the UHC was used throughout the day, we developed a hierarchy of inputs and outputs to inform our concept exploration.
Because of the complex processes involved, we used storyboards to build use case scenarios.
We turned our static concepts into a full scale interactive prototype.
We used the prototype during research sessions with crew members to shape the final design.
Alerts can easily be seen from a distance.
Today, our new alert protocols are being used throughout McDonald's worldwide.

McDonald's HD UHC
We helped to transform an outdated and inefficient UHC (Universal Holding Cabinet) into an easy to use, energy conscious device. We analyzed the workflow, built interactive simulations, and moderated research sessions throughout the iterative design process with the goal of making the UI as efficient as possible. The new High Density UHC is the most important piece of equipment in the kitchen. It's really the heart of each McDonald's, and it's never had such a healthy and vibrant pulse.
