My name is Stephen Ian Rawson, I am an aspiring designer with strong passion for designing and making products which challenge conformity and engage the user but also with strong roots in the world of the craftsman. After a year in industry with Lazerian I have developed an excitement for experimentation with different materials and processes but also a keen eye for the quality of a well-crafted product. In-turn this has given me a real appreciation for the way products are designed developed and manufactured and something that I can bring forward into my own work.

Currently a final year student at Nottingham Trent University Achieved a 2.1 for both my first and second year at University. Completed a year in industry with Lazerian in Manchester. Currently in my final term having completed: Minor Project, involved designing a Wood Splitting Axe and achieved a 1st for this project. Dissertation, titled: 'How important is craftsmanship in the modern world and should we seek to preserve the skills in the future?' Presently designing a storable piece of Garden Seating for Major Project.

The placement involved shadowing Liam Hopkins the only designer-maker within the organisation with everyday tasks within the business in addition to projects for both commercial clients and the company’s product range. The Internship was very manufacturing based, however it involved other elements such as CAD, meetings with clients and everyday office tasks.

My work Placement was carried out from the 15th to the 22nd of June 2011 where I accompanied Ilsa Parry Design Consultant, with some of her current projects. During the week I assisted with writing a report, CAD work and materials research for one of her developing products.
