What is the role of collective memory in transforming public space?
In the spring of 2014, I traveled to Medellin, Columbia with a group of designers from Parsons to work with a local theatre group and nonprofit called Casa Amarilla. Medellin has a long history of violence, from La Violencia to drug cartels, to the paramilitary and guerrilla presence. My research focused on the role of collective memory in creating and transforming public space. Through developing a participatory approach, we engaged adolescents from the neighborhood in a conversation about memory.
