Senior Capstone Project
Project Title: System to Convert Plastic into ‘Clean’ Energy
For my Senior Capstone Project, I worked in a team with four of my student peers. Our advisor was Dr. Yiannis Levendis. The focus of my project was to create a self-sustaining device for power generation by utilizing energy stored in waste plastics.
Problem statement: There is a rising need for sustainable, and often, clean alternatives to power generation from traditional fossil fuels such as coal, petroleum, and natural gas. The energy stored within waste plastics is comparable to that of gasoline, and can be released in a cleaner and sustainable manner.
We produced a working prototype, a patent is pending, and it received Northeastern University’s Outstanding Student Research Award for Engineering, Technology, Computer and Information Sciences.
