Black & Decker Jar Opener

Industrial Design for the original Black & Decker Lids Off jar opener; both the Final ID Concept and the final production unit, modified from the concept to ensure the vendor could meet the production schedule. The primary change was shifting away from a two-tier lift to a single, spring-loaded upper assembly; the aluminum guides being replaced with plastic to lower both complexity and cost. Other changes included removing a slight curvature of the outer form and reverting the activation button to an earlier shape (which was further modified after my departure from the company).

Product sales were significantly higher than anticipated, so much so corporate outlook was revised to reflect the extraordinary demand. Since replaced by new designs, these original units can still be found for sale at higher than original retail prices.
