S*MPLE PHONE - The simplest phone possible. A quick 45 minute photoshop sketch.
Ricoh iBall - A simple digital camera embeded in a Nerf like ball. This concept for Ricoh featured a rip cord timer. Pull the cors and throw the iBall and see what you get... winner of the first anual Shonan Design Award from Japan.
Chantal Wave and Swan - This duo was designed to help Chantal hit an intermediate pricepoint and sell in new kitchen retailers while still retaining the classic elements of Chantal's current kettle which had been in production for over 20 years. The design is still in production in a number of finishes and colors and can be found in better kitchen botiques.
Timex Asym - One of my first production products out of school, this brief was to design a unique style the blended sport and professional style and integrated Timex's new turn and pull technology which uses a unique system of spinning rings to set the time and alarm quickly and easily. The design was featured in Playboy Magazine (so I'm told) as one of the best gifts to get your man for Christmas...
Timex Grip clip - Designed at EVO Design to be a reinterpretation of the pocket watch, the brief was simple: take a carabiner and an existing digital module, mix them together and see what happens. The result was the first IDSA/Businessweek IDEA award that Timex and Evo had ever won. Featured in numerous publications, it is still in production today.
Kodak concept renderings - These excerpts from various projects for Kodak's one time use, and Digital divisions show the level of my typical concept sketches.
Burton Anon Cypher - This goggle features a hinged stap element that conforms to the rider's helmet ensuring good face fit and reducing fogging. It was inspired by a conversation with Burton's team in which the riders said their favorite car was the Audi A4 because they liked simple things that performed well and let them be the star... not their stuff.
Paypall eWallet - This concept was designed for a feature in Mobile PC magazine which featured devices of the future. A fully digital wallet that retained all your acount information, passport, driver's ID, and personal photos, it is activated with thumbprint recognition technology. It also ballences your accounts automatically and bills can be paid from it wirelessly. If lost (or stolen) the whole thing can be deactivated, a new one purchased, and resynced at home without ever going to the DMV.

nu*book. Core 77 1HDC entry - Carrying around a book isn't that big a deal. We don't travel with a library. The hassle is always remembering to get a new book for the trip.... nu*book does that.

Users can subscribe to monthly collections for an anual fee. For example, sign on for the Oprah book club, or New York Times best seller list, or Phillip K Dick award winners; and all new books on the list automatically download to the nu*book, always giving you that nu*book on the go.

Home Driver Drill - Concept for Core77 1HDC. A simple, rechargeable driver drill has to be the most common home power tool, and you are usually looking for it in a jam when you come home from Ikea at 10pm and want to start putting stuff together. I wanted to move away from the wannabe contractor aesthetic and more into a home appropriate look. Also thinking of people with small apartments (ie no garage), I sketched up a simple wall mount charging station with a bit center to hang in a closet or pantry.

Female Razor Concept Sketch - The idea was to make something very simple and tactile that was very easy to clean especially in shower use. All of those nooks and crannies in most current razors get so gunked up with soap. but you don't want the razor to slip in that application. So this has a large soft durometer urethane insert for a good grip that is very flexible in terms of the users style of holding. It doesn't have a right or wrong way to hold it.

  • A "must have" object of desire. I love the fact that I can readily carry my entire music library around with me, this is a natural progression. Instant access to virtually any publication is a fantastic concept.

  • Ace image sheet! Love the "Trilobite" design bottom left.

  • Like the left one. Is this PS over a sketch, real marker or SBpro? I vote marker.

  • Thanks man. These are 100% old school. Ballpoint, markers, white pencil and white chalk... the right one is a hue/saturation shift in photoshop of the far left one, just to round out the page.

  • Old school in the hiz-ouse.

  • Genius! and strongly presented

  • I needed to see this!

  • Love the asymmetrical speaker detail and running the chamfers off the top works nicely. Would be nice if the screen and base chamfers lined up in the open view. Sweet concept!

  • Very cool! I love the top right

  • ][ Like how the Stand fits to the Dodecahedron unit.

  • ][ Love the Representation, views and colours used ! the left white one doesn't really seem like the stray goes all the way round.

  • ][ like the contrast of materials used and how youve depicted them in the render.

  • Absolutely stunning work! As a firearms enthusiast and collector I'm very impressed with the designs. We need more work like this on Coroflot!

  • That is cool how all the sketch goes to one point....

  • Very quick illustrator, just a touch of photoshop, lots of bevel and emboss tool... if I where to spend another couple of hours resolving the design and then another hour really rendering it, I would be super happy with it.. for an hour's work I'm OK with this.

  • what's that program name ? it is truly amazing ~ of course, it is different from 3d program ? that means the quality of piece is up to users' 2d skills ?

  • I meant a lot of the bevel and emboss tool in photoshop...

  • The one point thing is simple, but it is always dynamic... each of the vehicles has a unique second point as well... it is super "snakey" :-)

  • Thanks, this was done in about an hour. Just a fun little concept.

  • Thaks for prompt reply ~ that's new & useful info even though i already knew it but i didn't try. good luck ~ ^ @

  • Thanks, the Dodecahedron was a design constraint for the audio technology and it was a challenge to get anything to look right with it. I was happy with where Aaron and I took it though.

  • Thanks, I love working on simple products, the things we all take for granted.

  • This was for Chantal, still in production which is awesome!

  • Thanks, I wore it the other day, after almost 10 years, I still love this watch.

  • @Michael Your school of though Inspires !

  • an hours work, thats outragous. I done a similar rendering stage for my sustainable transport project and spent about 8 hours on photoshop for each image. How do you get through it so fast?

  • Practice and experience... like a language, you become fluent in time.

  • very interesting your work, you have an amazing portfolio!!!

  • Thanks. The larger radii at the bottom and tight edges at the top are inspired by classic Braun calculators designed by Dieter Rams. I love small asymmetry like the speaker details, makes it a little human I think. It would be cool if the chamfers lined up, though I think this might be a little bit more realistic in terms of having a robust mechanism.

  • These little guys are really handy :) sweet ideation page

  • that's some work in Illustrator!

  • Strong set of sketches, dude.

  • Where are the concept sketches for this one? Always liked this resolution but would enjoy seeing them if you can share them.

  • nah, not too bad, maybe 45 minutes in illustrator.

  • Thanks man... I have the sketches somewhere... I'll have to dig them up, this was from 10 years ago!

  • Love the assimilation of different materials! but would prefer the tactility of metal buttons.

  • The bottom right speaker is just Fresh, sweet form!!

  • Thanks, inspired by a vintage microphone. This is from 2007 or so...

  • sweet!

  • very nice !

  • Thanks, these little Sunday renders are fun. I love doing CE.

  • This great concept has been featured on my blog: The best concept phones! http://blogpost.dj23.net/archives/92 Keep up the great work :D

  • I love the tasty forms. I get the feeling of eating gummy worms looking at the page on the right.

  • Thanks Jared. Simple restyle, but I think it was a nice evolution. The tighter radii at the top vs the larger at the bottom inspired by the old Dieter Rams Braun calculators.

  • awesome!

  • Thank you, these were from back in 2002/early 2003. Fun project, the challenge was to do something new and unique while still looking like a serious firearm, no ray guns, nothing too designy. A tough tightrope act.

  • top. very good.

  • love me some wood on metal... great gift set too!!!

  • Cute little buggers! These are really iconic and sweet.

  • Thanks Devin... I was hoping some people would pick up on that little bit of dark humor!

  • Thanks Ron. I love to do some old school sketches. Helps to stay sharp!

  • Really cool! Nice Style and good line work.

  • Thanks, these are from 2000, so a little old, but I still like the page.

  • Thanks, fun little sketch inspired by classic and new military backpacks.

  • Thanks, I wish some of these went to production. Fun forms.

  • love this render...looks so comfy on the wrist too

  • Thanks guys. This was just a concept meant to go with the Nike Newson shoe. The idea was that the movement would pop into the strap so you could swap strap colors. The strap ends work the same way (like a trucker cap) This sketch is from early 2003.

  • Nice, I like these pages with sketches and renders.

  • Love this marker render! We don't see enough of them nowadays

  • Sweet representations Michael, Im a sucker for Orange & Grey!

  • One of the things I love doing in these workshops is asking the professors what the students are working on. At WIT they were just wrapping up a tea kettle project, so I threw down a page of colored thumbnails and a concept sketch in about 30 minutes each. Not that they are awesome, or innovative, but just to show them how to move through ideas quickly. If you combine this rapid visualization skill set with innovative design thinking, you can do anything.

  • Awesome!...wish we could geta live demo!..;(

  • Would love to, if you guys want to fly me out...

  • Thanks. Just a page out of my notebook. I wanted to blow one out in photoshop.

  • Thank you. This was from 2003/4... not bad, it holds up a bit. I wish I had made the face a pure circle form.

  • sweet lines!

  • Really like the colour split on these. very nice.

  • Thanks all.

  • Thanks Anton. It is fun to play with a bunch of permutations of the same idea on a page like this.

  • Please make something, anything better than the Sigma!

  • Mike. Great set man! I should post some of my firearms sketches. These remind me of the Beretta Storm. Way cool... You can get a lot of cool guns on ebay that are rubber cast off of the real deal for reference.

  • Fantastic

  • Thanks guys. Was a fun little side project. I've done a few projects for the big razor brands, and the more sculptural, simple concepts seem to always be left behind in favor of very technical handles. This was based on how my wife uses her razor in the shower. I wanted something simple so soap would not collect in it, and have a hole so it could hang on a hook and dry. Plus the more sculptural form seemed much more appropriate to an object needing to relate to the female body.
